Cover Up #3: Freedom by Jonathan Franzen

Decided to create another re-designed book cover! This time for the epic Freedom by Jonathan Franzen. The plot is super complicated - so I really can't get into it all here. But it basically follows the life of a seemingly all-American family that is really falling apart behind the scenes. 

The cover inspiration comes from one of the main characters obsession with creating a sanctuary for a species of warbler. I decided to show a bird seemingly on an upwards flight path that suddenly starts to plunge downwards. Stylistically, I wanted the cover to look like a vintage bird-watching handbook (with my hand-drawn flavor) - if I was to print this, it would be screen-printed onto linen. 

Creating these covers has been a great opportunity to think more conceptually and to experiment. Hope you are enjoying this series :)
